worked in the Reagan White House for eight years. Comparing that experience with what I see today, in terms of Republican congressional leadership and the gaggle of aspirants for the GOP presidential nomination, makes my skin crawl. Particularly noisome is the attempt of some of these characters to snuggle up to air jordans Ronald Reagan, claiming to embody his philosophy and tactics. That’s like comparing the awkward performance of former House majority leader Tom DeLay on “Dancing With the Stars” to the grace of Fred Astaire
President Reagan held strongly to his deep beliefs and instincts. He also recognized that compromise is a necessary part of the American political process. Mr. Reagan’s highly effective relationship with Online shoes Tip O’Neill, the Democratic speaker of the House, exemplified this, and the result was effective bipartisan cooperation on both foreign and domestic issues.
Mr. Reagan and Vice President George H.W. Bush also had an important, low-key relationship, about which too little has been written. It was largely focused on foreign affairs, and in particular the problems associated with ending the Cold War. I was with the vice president when he first met Mikhail Gorbachev at the funeral of Soviet leader Konstantin Chernenko in 1985, and he showed me the message he sent to President Reagan about that meeting, which in essence said that Mr. Gorbachev was a man with whom the United States could work effectively. Mr. Reagan did just that. This is how Gorbachev himself put it in an April 1997 speech at Hofstra University :“I nike sb dealt with two presidents; with Ronald Reagan, with whom we Lebron james shoes began our work together at a time when the Cold War was at its peak, when the hostility between our two countries seemed irreconcilable. But we made a beginning, and I would like to take advantage of this opportunity, once again, to pay tribute to the wisdom of Ronald Reagan. The change in the relationship which generated hope took place on his watch and, in many respects, thanks to him.”
Mr. Reagan and Mr. Bush were men whose character and leadership made me proud to be a Republican. I see no one of their caliber among current GOP contenders. While I can no longer support the Republican Party, I know that there are still responsible, moderate Republican members in both houses of Congress. I hope that they will break away from the rigid orthodoxy of the Tea Party and reach across the aisle to strike compromises for the benefit of the country.
